UNS Number N06601
Inconel 601 is a nickel-chromium alloy used for applications that require resistance to corrosion and heat. This nickel alloy stands out due to its resistance to high temperature oxidation, remaining highly resistant to oxidation through 2200° F. Alloy 601 develops a tightly adherent oxide scale which resists spalling even under conditions of severe thermal cycling. This nickel alloy has good high temperature strength, and retains its ductility after long service exposure. It has good resistance to aqueous corrosion, high mechanical strength, and is readily formed, machined and welded. Inconel 601’s properties make it a material of broad utility in fields like thermal processing, chemical processing, pollution control, aerospace, and power generation. However, alloy 601 is not suggested for use in strongly reducing, sulfur bearing environments.

Machining and Fabrication with Inconel 601:
Inconel 601 can be machined using conventional machining methods which are used for iron-based alloys.Machining operations are performed using commercial coolants. High-speed operations such as grinding, milling or turning, are performed using water-based coolants. Heavy lubricants are used for tapping, drilling, boring, or broaching. It is formed using all conventional techniques. It is welded using gas-tungsten arc welding, gas metal-arc welding, shielded metal-arc welding, and submerged-arc welding methods. It does not respond to heat treatment. Inconel 600 is forged at 1038 to 1233°C (1900 to 2250°F). It is hot worked at 872 to 1233°C (1600 to 2250°F). It can be cold formed using standard tooling. Inconel 601 is annealed at 1149°C (2100°F). It is then cooled at temperatures ranging from 538 to 760°C (1000 to 1400°F) in order to prevent thermal cracking. It can be hardened only by cold working.
